Lab Animal Technician- WL
The employee performs pharmacokinetic and ADME-related studies in rats and mice, conducts aseptic, vascular implant surgery in rats, sets up, trouble-shoots and utilizes the Culex Automated Blood Sampling System to collect samples for assays. Other ADME-related studies are conducted by this employee, as well as developing, validating, and testing of updated, blood sampling equipment and accessories. This employee is responsible for general housekeeping and assisting other departmental personnel as necessary.
How you can contribute
- Performs routine daily observations in rats and mice.
- Performs dose administration procedures in rats and mice
- Prepares for, conducts, documents and reports basic pharmacokinetic studies in rats and mice.
- Conducts vascular implantations, bile duct, and GI cannulation surgeries in rats
- Conducts vascular surgeries in mice.
- Maintains laboratory supply inventory
- Reports in-life data from rat or mouse experiments.
- Maintains confidential information
- Interacts with the community and employees
- Supports and participates in other company initiatives as directed by senior management
- Performs other duties as assigned
Education & Experience:
- B.S. /B.A. in science (biology or equivalent) with 2 years direct laboratory animal work experience, or
- Associate degree, or equivalent, in science with at least 4 years of direct laboratory animal work experience, or
- Six years of direct laboratory animal work experience without a college science degree, or
- Equivalent combination of related education and required work experience will be considered with management approval.
- AALAS Certification or commitment to attaining certification within 18 months of start date.

- Exhibits adaptability and accuracy performing laboratory operations, some of which may be difficult and/or non-routine.
- Demonstrates an ability to use a computer to compile and maintain simple data, spreadsheets, checklists and reports for records and inventory, utilizing the appropriate software.
- Exhibits an aptitude for quality, an eye for detail, the ability to follow written instructions and work with a minimum of supervision.
- Displays a basic understanding of GLP, AAALAC, OLAW regulations and standards with the ability to apply these practices daily.

Tools, Equipment & Other Resources Used:
- Various software applications sustained by a Windowsä platform. (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
- General laboratory equipment, including but not limited to fluid/syringe pumps, balances, lab mixers, incubators, centrifuges, pipettes, and hand tools.
- Familiarity with Culex automated blood sampling systems/Empis automated drug administration systems is a plus.

Physical Activity:
- Moderate physical activity
- This position will require frequent walking, sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time, carrying, heavy lifting (max. 50 lbs), reaching while standing, gripping and twisting hand movements, finger control and other general repetitive motions (for more than four [4] hours per day)
- Able to wear nitrile gloves, latex surgical gloves, dust mask or respirator, and safety glasses as required.
- Ability to read and understand applicable materials
- Manual dexterity to operate laboratory equipment and calculator/computer
- Able to read and interpret test results and instrument specifications
Working Conditions:
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior office work or laboratory environment
- Work environment involves exposure to potentially infectious materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include use of protective equipment
- The noise level is usually moderate
- This position will frequently be involved with radiant/electrical energy, solvents, grease, oil, irritants, acids, bases, and other hazardous chemicals, electro-mechanical hazards, flammable materials and bio-hazards. Due to possible exposure to hazardous biological material or zoonoses, immunization to Hepatitis B and/or Tetanus or other diseases may be a requirement.
