Animal Care
The Animal Care Technician is responsible for assisting the contract research group with maintaining the well-being of research animals in accordance with all SOPs, applicable state and federal regulations, as well as guidelines set forth by the on-site clinical veterinarian.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Use simple laboratory equipment/apparatus under supervision.
- Maintain written records in laboratory notebooks, laboratory forms, or log book.
- Maintain laboratory animal colony.
- Clean and sanitize caging, equipment, animal rooms, and support areas.
- Dismantle, clean and assemble laboratory apparatus and equipment.
- Maintain good housekeeping in own work area.
- Maintain an adequate supply of stock items in own work area.
- Act as messenger for supervisor, as directed.
- Perform functions as assigned by supervisor.
- Participate in in-house training programs for the technical staff
- Maintain confidential information
- Support and participate in other company initiatives as directed by senior management
- Perform other duties as assigned

Skills and Abilities:
- Possess knowledge of animal physiology and morphology with the ability to use laboratory instrumentation.
- Good organizational skills.
- Ability to use a computer to compile data, maintain database/spreadsheet records and inventory utilizing the appropriate software.
- Ability to learn techniques used in the laboratory.
- Ability to handle laboratory instruments and tools, under supervision.
- Ability to handle animals and related equipment as required.
- Record data clearly and accurately.
- Exhibit a quality approach to work, possess an eye for detail, and demonstrate the ability to follow written instructions and work with a minimum of supervision.
- Possess a knowledge and understanding of appropriate regulations and demonstrate the ability to apply these practices daily.
- Ability to read and interpret animal identifications, dose groups, and color codes.
- Adhere to all pertinent safety regulations and operating procedures.
- Possess a favorable attitude and disposition toward people and animals.
Working Conditions
- Frequent involvement with solvents, grease, oil, irritants, acids, bases, and other hazardous chemicals, electro-mechanical hazards, flammable materials and bio-hazards. Due to exposure to hazardous biological materials, immunization to diseases may be a required
- Will be exposed to animal dander, bites, scratches, etc, and material associated with animal husbandry
- Able to wear latex gloves, dust musk and/or respirator, and safety glasses as required.
- The noise level is usually moderate to loud requiring ear protection
- Mantoux TB test with negative result is required
