ECG Interpretation Lab
May 5 and 6 Columbus, OH
In collaboration with The Ohio State University, Battelle and Data Sciences International
Simultaneous cardiovascular and pharmacokinetic data collection from the guinea pig using the Culex/Empis automated device from BASi.

This two-day conference will feature guinea pigs instrumented with a telemetry transmitter (DSI C50-PXT) to measure ECG and arterial blood pressure and outfitted with a dosing catheter and blood collection catheter while housed in the Culex system. The guinea pigs will be dosed intravenously with compounds to raise and lower blood pressure and a single dose of IKf blocker to lower SA nodal discharge. Cardiovascular data will be collected continuously and PK samples will be collected at specific post-dose time points. The collected data will be reviewed and interpreted as part of the demonstration. Clinic participants will experience a demonstration of the automated device by BASi during the live data collection. For more information, contact Candace Rohde via email.

Mouse Sampling on the Culex

The Mouse Advantage

  • Mice are smaller and more compatible with limited supplies of test article in early discovery.
  • More transgenics, knockouts, and specific disease models are available.
  • Mice are genetically closer to humans than other rodents.

Using the Culex to Sample Mice

  • Culex uses a NBW (no blood waste) method in mice to conserve blood volume.
  • Take precise samples as small as 5 µL(get two complete sets of blood samples from an individual mouse). Exact volume of blood taken is documented accurately.
  • No need to handle the mice for dosing. Less stress for the technician and for the mouse.
  • BASi offers training in surgical and handling techniques.
  • If you own a Culex, it may already be mouse-capable.

Culex-L for Large Animals

The Culex-L is an automated in vivo sampling system for collecting blood and other biological samples from pigs and other large mammals. The system utilizes the same concept as the popular BASi Culex instrument for rodents, permitting computer-controlled dosing and sampling through an implanted catheter, all without human intervention.

The pig is a valuable model for PK/PD and toxicology studies because of its similarities to humans, but manual dosing and collecting blood or other samples is difficult. Furthermore man-handling the animals causes very significant stress which has been shown to have pharmacological effects. The Culex-L eliminates human handling during dosing and sampling which significantly reduces stress in these animals. Under development is specially-designed instrumentation to simultaneously record important physiological data such as blood pressure, body temperature, ECG and respiratory and heart rates.

The Culex-L Automated In Vivo Sampling System is made to collect pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data during the course of drug metabolism experiments like no other instrument in the market. For more information, or to talk to us about collaboration, visit our website or contact us via email.
