BASi CRO News - January 2010

Evaluation of the Dried Blood Spot Technique for the Quantification of Diltiazem in Human Blood.
There is renewed interest in the development of the Dried Blood Spot technique (DBS) where blood samples taken during a study are spotted onto paper rather than collected into a tube. The DBS technique offers a range of benefits over traditional sampling techniques including: ease of collection and shipping; small sample volumes; reduction in animal numbers; ease of storage; and reduced costs in storage and shipping. The approach has been spearheaded by GSK in UK and US and has sparked interest from other pharmaceutical companies.

The benefits of this sampling technique for pre-clinical and clinical bioanalytical assays have been recognized by BASi, and we have been proactive in evaluating the extraction and analysis of compounds from dried blood spots. A DBS analysis technique has been evaluated at BASi to determine diltiazem in human plasma.
The evaluation was presented as a poster which was shown at the European Bioanalytical Forum (EBF) 2009. If you would like a copy of the poster please contact: email us

Further collaboration is ongoing with GSK in the UK, with a meeting this month to help direct our efforts. Additional development work is intended based on the outcomes from discussions with GSK.
